but boy, its sucks!!!
I spent yesterday with a friend in a huge park in Central London watching man-powered flying machines throw themselves off a ramp intot eh river!!! It was quite good fun, but with 100,000 people there it was way to busy, and I hate crowds!! So I only lasted 2 hours there, before discovering my road home was totally gridlocked, so I had to walk the 5 miles home, in 33C weather.. by the time I got home I had sweated all the sunblock off my face and was burnt to a crisp (only on my face though, my arms are fine!!!) and feeling decidely strange. I put it down to not having eaten all day, but dinner didn't help, so I went off to bed nice and early. After a nasty night of wierd freaky dreams and waking and tossing and turning I feel even worse today! My mood has plummeted terribly low, and I ache all over.
And its only gonna get hotter... Today is 35C, and Wednesday is forecast at 38C - its supposedly going to be the hottest day in UK since records began.. (about 140 years ago or something) I *HATE* the heat, and this is killing me.. we're just not set up for it here.. air con is rare in shops, let alone homes.. and we live in the middle flat so we get heat from below and protected from it excaping by above..
Went ou on a hunt for a fan this morning, and our whole area is sold out of them!!! But managed to find one place that can get me one in for tomorrow.. thank heavens!!Oh, and my psoriosis has decided to flare up after 5 years, so am itchy as hell and nothing is helping it. The red swollen patches look so attractive!!!
Then, to top it off, I got my period today too!! I only have one every 6 months as they're so bad for me (I'm on the Contraceptive pill and only take a break every 6 months) so feel like hell from that too!
OK, so I just needed a whinge!! Sorry, but feel better now its all out!

Can you (or somebody smarter than me) translate those temperatures from Centigrade to Fahrenheit?
We're currently in the 100's and above about every day, low 90's at night (that's Fahrenheit).
I sympathize with sunburns and heat stroke! Do people in the UK say "drink lots of water" (and beer doesn't substitute)? We encourage water here for heat stroke. People die from it every year.
And you without air conditioning!! Ick!

Not totally accurate, but close enough way to convert from C to F is..
C x 2 + 30 - 2 = F
so, 37c.. 37 x 2 + 30 - 2 = 102f
Its just really freakish for the UK to get this hot so none of us are used to it.. tonight is horrid and theres no chance I'll be getting much sleep (its 1:30am now).. Can't wait to get my fan tomorrow!!! Though I've been hinting on the mobile air con unit, but its ugly and expensive!!

I've spent two days drinking disgusting electrolyte powdered drink I bought back from Thailand (the bottled water there is chemically treated, and it was very hot, so we drank at least one electrolyte drink a day!)
Feeling much bette rnow though, and acheived more today than I have in ages!!

C = (F -32) divided by 1.8
F = (C x 1.8) + 32
(at least according to my physiology prof)
so: 37C x 1.8 + 32 = 98.6F
(still too hot in my book; hope the fan is helping)

Hi Nikki,
I can sympathise with you re: the heat, summers here are boiling hot. We are all geared up for it though, so without air conditioning, theres not much relief from it all....good luck!
Its so odd isnt it, I am sitting here with the fire merrily blazing away!
Keep cool,
Deb.

So.. I order in a nice floor fan.. go to pick it up yesterday and they've got me a stupid pedestal one, and say its either that or nothing.. I strop so they offer me the one they are using cheap.. £40 instead of £65,.. it looks nice (chrome and kinda retro looking) and seems a good deal.. so I buy it!! Its VERY heavy, so was a struggle to wlak home with it, but I make it.. plug it in and WHOOOSh.. the lounge virtually empties of everything!! Its an industrial strength fan so sooo powerful.. even on lowest setting we can't hear TV over it and it blows everything away...
So I call them this morning and ask if I can bring it back tomorrow as I hurt my arm bringing it home.. they say bring it bakc today or they won't accept it back!!! No way I can carry it there todfay (only about a mile away, but my arms hurt anyway and I don't want to totallyscrew it up today!).. so now I'm stuck with the huge fan that simply is way too strong for our tiny flat.. *sighs*Ho hum

Nikki,
You are quickly making your way to Honorary Texan status. The heat stroke, dehydration, misery, and learning your invaluable fan lesson. I've been thru all of those, and the fan lessons (there have been several) are the worst.One hint, if you spritz yourself with water while the fan blows on you, it's much cooler. Of course this may require a degree in engineering so that you can preserve the contents of your house, plus have the fan blow on you, while drinking water+electrolytes with the television blaring loud enough to get complaints from the neighbors.
Yeee Hawwww!

I learned it as:
F = 9/5C + 32
C = 5/9(F-32)
I remember this clearly only because it is current for me--visiting in a metric country, and it's hot!
Nikki,
Sorry to hear about the heat sickness--it feels awful--I've had it. I had a really bad burn once and had a fever for a week.

I know there are other more accurate ways of coverting C to F and back again... but they're all hard to do in yoru head,.. which is why I usemy not very accurate but gives a good idea!!!

Nikki, I hope your sun burn and illness are all better!
BTW, my sister gave my mother a quick reference method--just remember 2 or three key equivalents--like 0 C = 32 F, and 25 C = 77 F, and 40 C = 104 F, and just estimate from there.
I discovered on a long airplane trip recently, where they kept a running tally of flight data on the tv screens, that the C and F temps meet up at somewhere between -40 and -41 degrees (the air temp outside at 36,000 feet altitude was about -54 F/ -48 C, btw). I just found that interesting.
This is the end of the thread.
