Hi everyone!

Posted by LisaSimpson on May 15, 2003, at 7:24:06

I have been away from this site for quite a while. I've had a few problems... people who have kindly given me advice in the past have known about my fight with alcohol. I finally got admitted into The Priory, which is a private psychiatric hospital (luckily the company I work for pays for private health insurance!) and I had a week being detoxed off alcohol. They wanted to keep me in for another week and start me off on antidepressants, but after a week I was climbing walls... I had forgotten how I hated being incarcerated! However, it's so nice to have a clear head for a change, to be able to remember things. The only trouble is, the problem that started me drinking in the first place is still there (post traumatic stress disorder I think it is), so I have to deal with that - try to forget it.

I see all the old "favourites" are still posting... i.e. Noa, Greg, Shar, NikkiT2, CamW, Stjames, Tina... I'm glad to see you are all still here.

If anyone would like to say "well done" to me, to help me keep it up, I wouldn't mind at all! :)

The only one I know of you all who is based in the UK is NikkiT2, so Nikki, if you are listening, please leave a message to let me know how things are with you.

Best wishes to you all.

Lisa

HI,

good to see you!!! Oooh, The Priory.. any stars in with you??!! (for you americans, its the place all the famous people here go!!) Well done for getting off the alcohol.. my brother went through this a couple of years ago.. he was a AA person and now runs his own groups.

I'm doing alot better since having 8 months of CBT. Its just finsihed as my psychologist has gone off to have a baby and isn't beling replaced. But we did some great work, and my agorophobia has reduced dramitically (I'm even going on holiday on sunday without my husband, where as 8 motnhs ago I couldn't even leave the lfat without him!!), and my anxiety is so so much better. I found it great, and its just such a shame it has had to finish.
But I have a great new psychiatrist.. who is sexy as hell!!!

Having a slightly bad day today.. all self inflicted and am panicking a little about how to get out of it (money problems as ever with me). Hopefully a solution will come to mind soon though so I can calm down again.

Nice to see another old name, and a fellow brit back again.

Nikki xx

Hi Lisa,

It's great to hear from you, and that you're taking some positive to fight the alcohol addiction. You know that I know how difficult a task that is. I'm so very proud of you for doing this and you deserve all the pats on the back you can get. Make everyday of sobriety a day of celebration because you'll work hard to earn them.

I can relate to feeling incarcerated. I went thru an inpatient program almost 15 years ago (honestly, I had to do it twice, it didn't take the first time), and at times I felt like I was in jail. All the meetings, writing papers, having to do chores. But in the end (I was in for 48 days) it felt like a big family and I almost hated to go. The fear of freedom I guess.

They say that people who drink to get away from problems or traumas have an inability to live life on life's terms. I don't know if that's the case for you, but it sure was for me. People, places, and things just didn't do and react the way I wanted them to, so I drank. To be honest, I didn't even like the taste of alcohol. But I loved the high. Until I lost everything and everyone I cared about.

But you are on your way, and I know you can do it! So I'll say WELL DONE! You have a lot of hard work in front of you, so if you need to talk, I try to check in here at least once a day. You have my support Lisa. Again, I'm very proud of you!

Hugs,
Greg

Hi, Lisa,
I think it's all been said by a very articulate group, so I'll just add my 'well done, guvnor' or 'chin up' or 'wink wink nudge nudge' or whatever it is you all Brits say over yonder!

All of the above is just kiddin around, of course, and I hope you're doing very well, and Well Done! Visit here, and we'll talk, as detox can be a pain on down the road. You've got friends!

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your answers. It was really nice getting responses from you all... brought a tear to my eye!

Nikki, I didn't see anyone famous at The Priory, unfortunately. I was told by someone that Robbie Williams was due in, but was told by someone else that famous people probably had their own section, and didn't mix with us commoners!

The trouble is, that while I was in there, I had a lot of support from the people around me. But now I am back home, it is much more difficult. My husband doesn't give me any support. And it is so tempting to say, oh to hell with it, just one drink won't hurt, and there's no-one around who cares whether I do or don't. But I am trying, although it is still very difficult. I think I might have to find myself a local AA after all. I would hate to fail after having made it this far. Someone told me that if you start drinking again, you're not just starting from that point, but going right back to when you had your last drink. (Does that make sense?)

Oh well, fingers crossed... and I have you guys!

Lisa

Hi Nikki. Just wanted to ask you a quick question. Whereabouts roughly do you live in the UK? I just thought that if we lived close, maybe one day you might like to meet up for a coffee and a chat. I don't know about you, but I don't have anyone to talk to, really. Although you, on the other hand, may already have plenty of friends to chat to. If you don't want to say "in public", my email address is: lisasimpsonx@yahoo.com.

Anyway, just a thought...

Hey Lisa,

Just wanted to let you know that Nikki is on vacation for a few weeks and I don't know if she'll be checking in here or not. It may take her awhile to get back to you.

Lots a love,
Greg

Sorry for the delay.. been off on holiday to visit a friend in Canada *g*

I think AA would be a great idea.. atleast it will then give you people to talk to who understand... my brother used AA to give up drinking and it worked miracles on him.. he even runs his own groups now, 3 years on.

I live in West London.. where abouts are you??

Good that you're hanging in there hun

Hi Nikki - thanks for replying. I live Richmond/Kingston way. Know it? Where does your brother do his AA groups? I don't know which is a good one in my area. I went to one one evening while I was in the psychiatric hospital, and I didn't like it much. It was too heavily religious, and I am afraid I am not. But I do need to find somewhere, as I am having trouble at the moment, and I desperately need some support.

Hi again Lisa...

I know your area.. not very well, but I have been there..
My brother, unfortunately, doesn't live in London.. but on the east coast..
But, would it be worth trying to find another group in your area.. I'm sure your psych would be able to help you find somewhere.. or even your GP. My brother found the religion hard to deal with at first, but being a very unreligious man, he managed to get past it and grab at the things he did find helped. He did become slightly AA obsessed though!! *laughing*

I really hope you can find somewhere / somethiing that can help support you.

Nikki xx
