We did our taxes and found that we owe $3400 to federal and $1900 to State, ouch. I claimed married-2 during the year and Mary went single-0 and had extra taken out. Now, in my mind, if I go married-2 and I'm married with 2 dependants, that should even things out. And with Mary going single-0 with extra being taken out, we should have been good for sure. When I called the IRS and State to get extensions (which we got thankfully) they both told me that the only way that we could avoid this happening every year is if we both go either married-0 and withhold at a higher single rate, or single-0.
All they would tell me is that this is how it works. Does anybody have enough of a grip on this that they can explain it to me so my feeble mind can understand?
Thanks,
A financially shocked Greg

.......In a word, no. Just wanted to add that my adjusted gross income last year was less than $11,000 and I owed $557 in taxes. Now I know what they meant when they said they weren't going to balance the budget on the back of the poor MAN.
(really, I know it sucks equally for men and women)
