Gingko Biloba for SSRI sexual dysfunction....

Posted by rg on October 10, 1999, at 7:28:10

I have recently read that Gingko Biloba can help with sexual dysfunction in SSRIs, in particular Prozac.

Follow this link: http://www.navicom.com/~patty/eng/ging.htm

Anyone willing to try this and report back to the group? Personally I would suggest 500mg of Gingko twice a day, speak to your health store about it.

Safe and Effective Treatment for Antidepressant Induced Sexual Dysfunction

During a study of ginkgo biloba's effects on memory improvement, one man told the researchers that his erections improved. This prompted a study on sexual dysfunction in patients taking antidepressants. While most patients were taking SSRI medications, some were on other antidepressants as well - including the newer ones and the older tricyclics.

91% of women and 76% of men reported success. Ginkgo improved all four phases of the sexual response cycle: desire, excitement (lubrication and erection), orgasm, and resolution (afterglow).

The dose range was 60mg daily to 120mg twice daily, but averaged 209mg per day. The more common side effects included headache, feeling wired, and intestinal distress.

It is felt ginkgo worked on many different mechanisms in the body.

(Note: ginkgo's main problematic side effect is bleeding - although it's rarely a problem. In my experience the side effects mentioned above are exceedingly rare. - Leland M. Heller, M.D. May 30, 1999

Tried Gingko Biloba and Yohimbe, but they didn't do much for me (just kept me awake and made me feel jittery).

120 mg twice a day had a significant impact on ability to obtain/maintain erection and to consummate intercourse

Re: Gingko Biloba, 500 mg (!), too much?

500 mg sounds like too much, was that an error?

The gingko pills I have are 40 mg, so if I took 500 mg twice a day, that would be about 24 pills?

I just started doing this and take 1 pill in the morning and one at night for a total of 80 mg. I'm in favor of trying this approach but I will start slowly andmonitor my progress.

I will read the article and see what dosage it suggests. If this works it would be a much easier approach than getting into all the other prescriptions meds suggested for sexual problems associated with SSRI's.

I agree. Must be a typo? 500mg is way too much. The talk radio doc (Dr Dean?) said a couple months back that high doses gingko can cause some sort of eye bleeding that looks like a glass half-filled with blood. Yikes. It thins the blood. I used to take it with no real effect, except it did make me feel a bit more energized and if I cut myself shaving it would bleed forever. I think the dosage is supposed to be more like 60mg to 120mg a day.

I was just speaking with a fairly conservative naturopath and he recommended 320 - most capsules I've seen are 60 mg. so 5 0r 6 would put you on either side of that. Supposedly it can help with memory, concentration and possible helping alleviate depression. Any sexual performance benefits would just be a bonus on top of all that.
