Effexor and Risperdol - is it working?

Posted by colleen on August 7, 1999, at 23:48:40

I'm having a hard time determining if my medication is working. My moods and thoughts seem to cycle rapidly and I do not know what frame of mind I will be in from one moment to another. I'm having a hard time concentrating, keeping focused on tasks that need to be done. This is so hard for me since I need to perform at my job, which is technical, and I'm afraid my boss will call me into his office asking me why I'm just staring at the walls. I'm also feeling discontected from the world. I've always had a teriible time soicializing and right now I just want to withdrawl completely. I've been diagnosed as depression and schizoid affective disorder. I'm having a hard time controlling my thoughts. I also have side effects from the meds that are unpleasent. I dont' know what to do at this point. I've taken differenct drugs over the past 20 years and it seams that the work in the beginning but the start being inaffective. Any suggestions?

dear Colleen,

If you are experiencing rapid cycling, why aren't you on a mood stabalizer? Perhaps something like neurontin along with the effexor and risperdal might help. And about the fact that your trials of anti-depressants work only in the beginning --I read in the pharmachology tips that this kind of response is an indication of bipolarity. I had the same problem. I started to get better on a regiment of effexor, remeron, and neurontin.

Also, a note on the risperdal. I tried it for about six months. It was helpful to me but after a while, I started developing severe akathesia (inner restlessness) and restless legs syndrome.
Just thought I'd let you know of my experience in case the same occurs with you -although this may very well not happen to you.

Best,
mila
