I posted earlier, but here goes again. I'm looking for general info on Amitriptyline, when does it peak, why do I have to take it before bed, why am I losing my hair. I was struggling with extreme mood swings untill today, when my dosage was upped by 25 milligrams. I need to know what warning signs to look out for and what sexual side-effects there are. Anyone with experience with Amitriptyline that would like to share their advice with me would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
dove~

I responded earlier, but did not see th post for
some reason.I have heard that the peak serum is reached
rather quickly with ami (6-10 hours) and it
does not have a long half-life compared with
Prozac.Side effects: sleepiness, dry mouth, low blood
pressure. I liked it very much but can no longer
take in high mg's due to heart situation. It
also seemed to work on my migraines...Good luck!
Sean.

Why before bed -- It's very sedating (the most sedating of the common tricyclics) and most people would hate taking it any other way!
On other questions I've no solid answers, but the sexual side-effects are likely less of a problem than with SSRIs for many people. Many of the obvious anti-cholinergic side effects with tricyclics (dry mouth, constipation, etc) tend to subside over time. I wouldn't get too worried about "watching out" for things! :-)

Can't help with the hair thing. I took tryp
for 5 or 6 years. Here's what I noticed..
1.My usual dose was around 250mg day
2.I slept better than I ever believed possible.Taking it at night, after an hour or less, I felt like my brain and body weregradually
stepping down-kind of like a generator(hard to put into words). But I could sleep thru anything
and felt good in a.m.
3.I exercised like crazy on it but gained about 20 pounds.
4.Constipation never levelled off for me.
5.I did have a problem with heights and it didn't have to be very high!
6.Chocolate and sweets were VERY IMPORTANT to me!
7.Sex was, generally, something that other people did. Well, that one is about the same now but not due to meds.
8.Urinary retention.
9.On a positive note, it got me thru a really tough period of life for me.
10.Don't even THINK about stopping it without consulting your doc first.
This is the end of the thread.
