tends to be those who are bi polor who can't get good mood control with meds. same for depressives.
The big question is how depression effects everyday life, what your history has been in terms of functioning and and ability to keep a job or work. It is always a fight...I had a client who was in a wheelchair with a major brain injury who could not get disibility ( the first time) but was sucessful the 2nd time.

i've been told that one is automatically turned down for disablity the first time one applies for it.. you'd be surprised how many people give up.. the key is not to... and be willing to be subjected to their doctors

I've been on SSI since Dec of 98. I'm 22 years old and I've been depressed for about two years. I applied for SSI in August of 98 and was approved a few months after that. I'm been diagnosed with Major Depression. For the last two years I've been in and out of hospitals because of suicide attempts. The Dean at the college where I was attending put me on a leave of absence for a year. I couldn't work or anything after that and so I decided to apply for SSI. I think if you've been to the doctor or been admitted to a hospital because of depression and have records of it, you could try to apply for it. But I think it would have to be severe enough for you to not be able to work. And your doctor would have to have it written down because that's what they go by. If you really need it, you should give it a try.
