Social Axiety-Facial Sweating

Posted by Ernest on March 23, 1999, at 15:55:28

I'm a 39 year-old male that has just been diagnosed with
social anxiety. I'm socially functional and the only
symptom that causes me considerable concern is considerable facial
sweating whenever I'm the center of attention-real or perceived.

My psychiatrist prescribed me a low dosage of .25 mg
Xanax and 20 mg Inderal and also wanted me to try Paxil.
The Xanax and Inderal slightly decreased the sweating
a little, but did not stop it altogether. After
researching all the side effects, specifically sexual
dysfunction and weight gain, I refused to take Paxil.

I was then prescribed Tofranil @.25mg a day to try and
control the facial sweating, but after one dose and 24 hours
of extreme hyperness I had to stop the Tofranil.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

James here....

You did not stay on Tofranil long enough to see if it would work. Many side effects stop after you take the med for a week or so so 1 dose and 24 h is not long enough. Look at the tip and tricks that doc bob has on sweating.

I suffer from excess sweating and blushing of the facial area. I recently got quite excited about ETS (surgery) to alleviate this condition. After researching this procedure on the net a little further I have discovered some concerns about the surgery's effectiveness/side effects. Can you shed any light????? Any practical assistance would be very much appreciated.

Thanx

Don't do it, the risk that you will get moderat to extreme compensatory sweating on your trunk and lower body is considerable, especially when the surgery concerns facial area(not palms).
Try low dose of Klonopin 0,5-2 mg or in combination with low dose of citalopram 5-10 mg.
If you must try surgery, be sure that they do it
with a clamp, that can be removed if you get intolerable side effects.

I've had surgery when there were better options and I didn't realize it at the time. I didn't get a second opinion or find out all the alternative treatments available. I regretted it but have learned to live with it and accept it now. Surgery is a HUGE step that requires very careful consideration. It shouldn't be taken lightly by any means. I think you need to weigh all the alternatives out-pros and cons, that sort of thing.

I have seen commercials on t.v. that say that Paxil is for social anxiety as another option for you. I take paxil and it helps my anxiety and so does a low dose of ativan. Best of luck to you.r.a.
