changing prozac to wellbutrin

Posted by indigo on March 15, 1999, at 0:53:49

I would love some help with this. I have been on
Prozac 60 mg for a year and it worked really
well, with minimal side effects except for
excessive weight gain. With my doctor's supervioson
we reduced the dose of Prozac to 40 mg for 3
weeks and she has asked me to stop taking any for
2 weeks. I am only two days in to the washout
and am experiencing side effects. I am supposed to start
the wellbutrin at 150 mg once a day. CAn anyone share any tips with me
and/or can anyone tell me if it will truly be workth it
to go through this switch - ie. will it really stop me from
gaining weight and maybe even help me to los?

Right now I'm scared and I want to go running back to my Prozac but I don't want
to gain any more weight. Help! Help!

> Indigo: I would call your Dr. and tell him that the side effects are bad. I think you might need a couple of weeks at 20 mg. Prozac. The half-life of Prozac is really long, and it will stay in your system for awhile, and that's why the dr. suggested 2 weeks off. You might suggest to your dr. to try one pill every other day as part of your cutoff period. I took prozac for 5 years or so before it "pooped-out" on me.

I take Wellbutrin, and I lost about 15 lbs. the first year I was on it. Things tasted a little different, and I had a lot of energy, and I just wasn't hungry. For me, that's unusual, since I EAT when I'm depressed. The weight has come back, but very slowly. This could work for you, but make sure you tell your dr. about what you experience between the meds. The dr. should be able to help you come up with a scheme that will bother you less.

Good luck

You are probable experiencing some discontinuation
symptoms from stopping the Prozac. These are not
dangerous, are common with antidepressants like
Prozac (though Prozac is much less likely to
have these effects on discontinuation), and they
go away. Wellbutrin is a good antidepressant
for some people and is in fact often used together
with medications like Prozac. I would talk
with you psychiatrist who can help you
manage through this difficult transition.

You also might want to ask why you need the
two-week washout--this is incredibly important
(and life-saving) when changing from a med like
Prozac to an MAOI like Nardil, but is not
necessary for changing to a med like Wellbutrin
(in fact, they are often used together and they
don't interact).

I know this is an old post but just found it. I've been taking Prozac for about 10yrs but it pooped out on me and the pdoc added Wellbutrin with the Prozac but now he wants me to stop taking the Prozac all together and just stay on Wellbutrin. I'm concerned because if Prozac did work for quite a few years, don't I still need seratonin? Wellbutrin is norepinephrine (sp) and dopamine. Just wondered if you're still on just the Wellbutrin and how you're doing on it?
