I recently attended a lecture on psychopharmacology
and learned that the SSRIs (with the exception of
the new one, Celexa) have a metabolite, cytochrome
P450 that causes Vicodin and Codeine to be less
effective when taken with the SSRIs (i.e. Paxil).
What can you tell me about this? I work as a Family
Nurse Practitioner in a chronic pain clinic where
a large majority of my patients are taking opiods as
well as anti-depressants.

> MattThis is one risk of combining SSRIs with other agents. I've been working on a web page of links relating to this subject; it's a work in progress, but you can read it at http://www.mit.edu/people/shapere/Drugs/links-kinetics.html. (I don't think the BTP site is on there; I should probably add it.)
This is the end of the thread.
