Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter," has reportedly been killed by a stingray strike to the chest, while filming on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44 years old.
Part of me says that, tragic as this is, it's better to go quickly while doing something you feel passionate about. Most of me, though, says it's just an unmitigated tragedy. I wasn't necessarily a fan of his, but I still think it's a tragedy when someone so young dies suddenly like this, without a chance to say goodbye to his loved ones.
Funny, isn't it? At one time in my life, I would have thought 40 old. And I would have said he was lucky, not to have to do this anymore.
Pray, if you choose to, in memory of Steve Irwin, or anyone else you choose. Pray for his widow, and their children. Pray for us all, now and at the hour of our deaths.
I must be tired -- that doesn't sound like me at all. That poor man, and his poor widow.

Steve was my first reptile hero.. What ever else, I learned alot from steve before moving onto more "serious" herpitologists..
I find this so sad.. so very sad.. My thoughts go out very strongly to Terri and his two small children..
if nothing else, steve opened up Australia's wildlife to those of us living half a world away.. and worked tirelessly to save endangered species.. Not such a bad thing..

Estella, I'm not a fan, either, and I have a hard time not saying he died of hubris -- though I have no evidence to base that on.
Still, it saddens me, to a surprising extent. Maybe because I'm about his age. Maybe because I can empathize with his widow. Or maybe because I hope when my time comes I'll be able to say goodbye to my loved ones, and clean up my messes so they won't have to. Maybe because, somewhere deep inside myself that I hardly know exists, I think everyone should have the chance to make peace with God -- whatever flavor of God you like.
I don't know -- all I can say is that it saddens me more than I would have expected, and that it's way past my bedtime.
OK, everyone. I'm going to bed now -- and I'm taking the cat with me. You may now return to your regularly scheduled broadcasting...

try to remember there are people out there who are fans though..
and that he did *alot* more than just his TV shows.
I'm not sure I feel so happy about all the joking in this thread *sighs*I, stupidly maybe, am really upset by Steve's death.. he was someone who did have a big impact on my life.. Yeah he may not have been a full on herpitologist.. but he did ALOT to raise awareness about reptiles etc.. He also did ALOT of environmental work in Australia. Did you know it was him who basically, single handedly, fought against package holidays where people would go shoot crocs? Australia zoo is a major player in breeding programmes to prevent extinction..
OK, how about all the work Steve did on venom extraction in order to develop life saving drug treatments?I am sad - and I mean that in the strongest possible sense.
Please. Even if people don't like the guy, show some respect to those that did.

I think he did wonders for raising public awareness about the value of "non-fuzzy-cute" creatures, and have endless respect for that.
I think it's a tragedy.

That reminds me of the feelings I had about "Grizzly Man". Very mixed feelings of awe and admiration along with dismay and sorrow for the whole of the tragedy.

It hit close to home. It's exactly the kind of commuter flight my husband and I take when we travel. I've not yet flown out of Lexington, but I use Louisville a lot when I need to save money. Any of those passengers could have been just like me. It's heartbreaking and tragic and it makes you think and question. It really shook me up.
I can relate.
I'm sorry it's upsetting for you. It's part of what I love about you, though. Your humanity, empathy, and depth.

I don't think anyone intentionally meant to be negative. Expressing a personal dislike for a person isn't necessarily negative, but people who are upset and feeling sensitive about his death might find it a little hard to hear.
I really didn't like or dislike him, but its always sad when someone dies. Especially when they have small children.
Very sad.

Its thought to be a healthy defence.

On that note I've done a bit of an archive trawl and what do I find but me reaching out to crazy t over on the newbies boards. Guess it just isn't true that 'you have never posted anything nice to me or reached out to me in any way whatsoever'.
Sometimes I think my biggest mistake...

Even though I'm terrified of snakes, I'd watch his show just to see if some of his enthusiasm for life would rub off on me. Never have a I seen someone that was so passionate about a cause.
I was just flipping through the channels and saw that they were airing one of his shows telling the story about his wife and his children. It's so sad.

I was really surprised that that was considered negative.
I actuatlly thought saying "I'm not a fan" is a very polite way of being honest.I mean what if GWB died?
That would be about all I could choke out.
And there's no universal consensus on who is someone to be idolized.I actually got crap at work for not being suitably sad when Benny Hill died, I wasn't rude, I just couldn't pretend to be sad for anyone but those who loved him.

Can you imagine that a band that evolved their sound could have started as "The Abdabs" (or "The Screaming Abdabs")? Or even "The Tea Set"? Or that there were two bands called "The Tea Set" at the same time?
