LYING ABOUT FB + TWTR....why am i not surprised?

Posted by fayeroe on April 21, 2010, at 17:56:58

I reactivated my Facebook account today to click on a button so the ASPCA will receive a donation from Walmart. I intended to delete the account as soon as I did my deed for animal rescue.

I MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT I WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BIG FACEBOOK AND TWITTER EXPERIMENT. ( I "OPTED OUT" TWICE (2) (dos) BECAUSE I KNOW HOW 'MISTAKES' ARE MADE HERE AND I THOUGHT I WOULD BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS........)

Bob, the lies are all going to come home to roost one of these days.......some were exposed in the comments that were posted to the NYT article about the "drug" forum. Too bad the comments were closed early. I would post about this.

This post was in my message box. This is dated January, 2010. I haven't been an active member here since 2009. I have no idea who "Pabo" is/was/will be.it doesn't matter because I believe that this was a "planted" post. I've seen comments here that I thought were planted in the past. ( I see that "Pabo" didn't come back to the thread.)

An introduction and hello

Posted by Pabo on January 4, 2010, at 21:59:10

Hello, and wishes for good health to all,

I don't wish to bore so I'll try to be concise without seeming curt, although this may be an exercise in contradiction.
I'm married and I'm also a military veteran. My education includes two college degrees although I'm still probably the worst speller I know. I'm close to retirement age and I've been in the same career, with the same employer, for over 25 years.
I became aware of the Psycho-Babble web site while googling medication information.
The factors most conducive to my wanting to join Dr. Bob's Psycho-Babble include: 1)Member input and type of information I've already seen in forums; 2)Reading the entire text in Dr. Bob's "Welcome", 'whew' and referencing the FAQ; 3)Perusing Dr. Bob's comments & background in his biography, as well as the stated philosophy offered in direction of participants. 4)Appreciation of the time and effort provided to produce this web site; 5)Being able to pass the required quiz to register after reading the disclaimers, 'whew' again, so I could earn access; 6)Lastly, having the desire to benefit and contribute by information exchanges and also gain from the uniquely individual vantages provided in forums by other Psycho-Babble members.
"This order of mention may not be the order of priority".

I've had issues for more than two decades that I continue to navigate and confront. The nature of these 'life events' I'm willing to share. Some of my 'events' are, injuries that have resulted in chronic pain, medication dependency, severe hearing loss, and I'm currently experiencing a depression that's created almost total anhedonia.
I wish to participate in forums I find interesting and I'm looking forward to sharing information. If I don't agree with something, I'll share my diverging information as I believe appropriate. I'll always remain civil. I plan to be supportive and encouraging, or if I have nothing to contribute that is beneficial, I will remain silent. I believe humor is beneficial, when appropriate. I think humor piques interest and I know it also assists with my method of absorbing information. I also think levity may contribute light in darker subject areas when used with discretion and good judgement.
Thank you for your time to read this too lengthy introduction. I look forward to participating with members and exhanging thoughts and information.

I don't know anything at all about Facebook. How do things end up in your message box there? Someone sends them to you? Does it show a sender?

> I don't know anything at all about Facebook. How do things end up in your message box there? Someone sends them to you? Does it show a sender?

Dinah, I am totally puzzled over this. It didn't show a "sender". It was just there!

My account has been deactivated since I saw the links under our names last year. I couldn't figure out how to delete it so I deactivated it. I went back and read about deactivation after I saw this message and it clearly said that no one would be able to access my "information". It may have even said "profile information".

This time I hunted until I found how to delete the account and followed the instructions. I just received an email from FB about the deletion.

I am at a total loss over how this happened. You posted in that thread, do you remember "Pabo"?

There are probably hundreds of people that I know has FB accounts and I cannot think of anyone that I would want reading my posts here. I copied and pasted that entire message so the posters can see how easy it would be for someone to come back here on the link and read everyone's posts.

I just don't know................P

p.s. I wish that I had clicked on the link that says "if you think your account has been hacked into" and I might have been able to at least find out how the message got there.....oh, well.........it isn't the cure for cancer so I can't spend too much time worrying about it..

I'll wait and see if Bob steps up and explains how that thread got to MY page.........he is responsible for this regardless.......

Fayeroe, sorry to hear about this. I'd be upset too, so I totally understand.

At the same time, thanks for bringing this up again. After I read your comment, I noticed every one of those new members' (with the green "new" indicator next to their names-see med board) comments are linked to Facebook as noted by the icon count in their post. So anyone who responds to them will be linked to whatever Facebook account.and put on who knows what sites..

So maybe he is doing this automatically now? Either that or it is another research experiment, or it is a huge coincidence that every new poster has suddently chosen to link their message to a Facebook account.

Again, thanks for bringing this up. Although I only post here on and off lately, this is my last post here. I used to write a lot. The disregard of member privacy here is just not worth the risk in using this forum.

Take care

I've never done more than a glance at Facebook. In fact, it might have been Myspace. So I have no earthly idea how it works.

Maybe Dr. Bob or someone who understands it will have an explanation.

I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant surprise though. That would have freaked me out too.

Would anyone be willing to try to show fayeroe how she might rephrase that or to encourage her to apologize? You may have the power to help her avoid being blocked again.

In reply to Re: being blocked again, posted by Dr. Bob on April 22, 2010, at 7:42:41

I never like to see anyone blocked, and certainly not when they are obviously upset and worried. And for myself, I'd prefer that the choice of whether to post here or not be left in my own hands, not yours. You never know what might happen that might make you wish to be able to post.

But putting aside the issue that Fayeroe could choose to apologize for the manner in which she asked the question in order to avoid a block. And that I'd certainly prefer that Fayeroe not be blocked.

It's clear she's extremely upset and anxious. And that it also might be upsetting to others.

Do you think you could explain, to the best of your knowledge, what might have happened? I have no idea how things get into messages at Facebook, or who can send them, but if you do know, could you please explain. It might go a ways towards cooling things down a bit, and be a way *you* could help the community and keep Fayeroe able to choose to post if she wishes to do so.

It's hard for me to believe that it's something that Babble does, or you'd have gotten complaints enough to fill these pages. But is there any way that anyone who doesn't have Fayeroe's Facebook information could have gotten it through Babble? Is there any way for posts to be sent to someone's facebook page if they don't hit the button, or someone doesn't know their identity?

A lot of people, me included, don't understand Facebook very well. And people tend to get upset if they don't understand. I'd be upset myself if it happened to me.

I realize you're a person too, and that you wish to be spoken to respectfully. But can't you address *both* issues, and respond to the feelings behind Fayeroe's posting style? I know your position here isn't to give support and education. But I also know that you can be compassionate, and IMO compassion is a part of *any* role and *any* job.

I'm sorry, Fayeroe, for talking about you in third person.

For what it's worth, I like and respect you, and while I would like for you to be able to post if you wish, I totally support your choosing to do what is the best thing for you.

I'm sorry this Facebook thing happened. I'd be totally freaked myself. And I hope Dr. Bob and anyone else who might know decide to shed whatever light they can on the incident.

The number to the left of the green "tweet" button is the number of times tweeted, see:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#sharetweet

The server does in fact automatically welcome new posters on Twitter, see:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/consent.html

Links to posts open the posts for anyone who clicks on them. And when they open, they show who's responded to them. That's true if the links are on Facebook, Twitter, Google, or blogs -- or in emails.

> The disregard of member privacy here is just not worth the risk in using this forum.

This is a public forum, not a private one. As it says in the FAQ, the only way to be completely safe from those risks is to abstain from this activity:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#privacy

Others won't then be able to benefit from your thoughtful and intelligent posts, but that's the trade-off.

Bob

Just found this I do use facebook and couldn't access the instant newspage about this time yesterday but when did last night noticed something new on facebook a link to different sites. Since it was late I didn't take the time to see where to links went to. But a large circles in center and then smaller ones to different sites off to the side with names written of sites in it. Humm wonder if babble was one? Phillipa

Dinah, I thank you so much for talking to me about this. I really do appreciate your concern and I appreciate your talking to Bob about my being blocked.

Obviously neither of us know enough about FB to understand the "how" of this and I already have a headache today so I am not going to worry about "why".

Thanks, Dinah, for being so supportive. I hope that Bob gets over his FB fetish and Babble can settle back down into it's old comfortable ways.

Let me point out to you, Bob, that I said "the lies"......Did you think I meant "your" lies? Tsk, tsk, you're projecting again.

Don't bother asking the posters to help keep me from being blocked. I definitely won't be staying. Of course if it will make you feel better, block ahead...I'm 66 so if you take your little math equations and block me til the end of time........I won't miss much. :-) ......

Only reason I dropped in with the FB post was to let my friends know that Babble still works in mysterious ways. I must add that I suspect that Babble will always be a mystery to most.

I miss the old Babble very much.

At least we know that there won't be any "new and interesting posters" coming in from my FB account. :-)

Later, Bob.

Feelings yesterday on FB

I want to explain how I felt yesterday when I saw that message on my FB page.

My very first response was fear.

My heart started pounding and my hands were shaking.

I felt violated.

My brain kicked in and then I started thinking about "how could this be?". "How did this happen?"

......but my very first response was
simply fear.

I don't think I have to explain to anyone here how devastated I would be if a person from FB came into (from my account) Babble and read our posts. And if Bob points out that "this is a public forum".....yes, it is. He misses the point about none of us wanting people that we KNOW on FB coming in to nose around.

Be safe, everyone.......Fayeroe

Bob, it would be so very nice if you had logged in and said something like

"Fayeroe, I am so sorry that this happened to you".

"Fayeroe, I know this must have been terribly upsetting."

"Is there any way that I can help you ?"

"I'll look into this and make sure it won't happen again".

I'm moved by your ability to explain your feelings and disappointment. I've felt the same way so many times. Not only on Babble. It really resonates with me.

I suppose Dr. Bob might not consider it part of his role to do the same. :(

But I hope at least he responds with as much explanation as he might be able to give about the facebook incident.

Please don't post anything that could lead others (including me) to feel accused. Even if you feel afraid. Especially if you don't know what happened.

But please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you. I don't want anything bad to happen to you. In a crisis, please also get help in person. You may also wish to check out a listing compiled by a poster of helpful web pages on coping with crisis at:

I do hope that you choose to remain a member of this community and that this community helps you, if needed, to avoid future blocks. Dinah, thanks for trying to help this time.

More information about posting policies and tips on alternative ways to express yourself, including a link to a nice post by Dinah on I-statements, are in the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#enforce

Follow-ups regarding these issues, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

PS: According to the formula:

duration of previous block: 7 weeks
period of time since previous block: 33 weeks
severity: 2 (default)
block length = 5.96 rounded = 6 weeks
