How about the idea of a better chat than Yahoo attached to Babble? I know you're worried about civility...

I remember we talked about that at the party. I'm open to it. Does anyone know if it can be done in Perl?

I've used a number of perl based chat scripts. I'll see if I can track any of them down -- some had really fun features, all worked well enough for my needs.
NB: my computer has been down for some time, so I can't just search my own records. Finding the ones I used might take a while, so don't necessarily count on me... (Might be a good excuse for hte expense of fixing my computer, or at least retrieving any data that has survived...) There are also a couple of really nice JAVA or Javascript based chats out there...

The Yahoo chat feature is Java based. Not sure if that's their problem.
But I know Windows no longer includes Java in their package, and you have to go to the Java site and download it. It hasn't been working so well since then.
Does that mean Windows is now offering a competing product?

> Shame on ITS...Bad news on that one, I'm afraid. HTML is a static markup language, so the only way to have anything like a 'real time' chat using HTML is to code the page to reload entirely every few seconds -- and that would mean that slow typists couldn't write much ;-)
The good news is that you can use perl scripts -- if you couldn't, you wouldn't be able to post here. These boards use perl, so if you can read the board you can probably deal with perl, and if you can post, you certainly can. (AOL often has issues with perl-based functions, or used to when I used to do this sort of thing more often. perl scripts ask the server to do something -- usually send or receive something -- which is done on the server, and then sent back to your browser. All your browser has to do is deal with the HTML.)
But I'll make sure I look specifically for those perl-chats...

Thank you :-)
I really want to chat.
I've never been able to...
Officemate said something about the HTML ones refreshing slower than the non-HTML ones which are constantly refreshing / updating. That that is why ITS block the non-HTML chat (fairly expensive) whereas classforum online learning makes use of HTML chat which isn't so expensive for departments to fund...

I'm open to a better option, but I haven't had time to research it. Does anyone know of something more reliable?

I'll see if I can think of anything else.

I haven't, but I'd be willing to give it a go. I was wondering what other chat resources were out there.

I have almost every form of chat client you can think of. The problem is, not everyone uses the same one (hence, why I have so many). I have some friends who only use MSN and others who only use AIM or Yahoo. And there is no way to do a universal Dr. Bob chatroom with any of those. Everyone that wanted to use it would have to sign up with what ever chat client was chosen.
It's still MUCH better to have a dedicated chat channel on this site. It's just a matter of what Dr. Bob chooses to use and how complicated he wants to make it for himself.
I wonder if he's even looking or if other things regarding the site are a little more important right now.

okay so it let me in once.
when i tried to type something
(to practice chatting by myself lol)
it booted me out. happened a couple of times.
is that normal for chat?
(ie is that what everyone has been complaining about)
tried to get in today and yesterday too...
and it wouldn't load.
some problem with java 'null pointer exception' or some crap
or 'applets won't load' or some crap
is that what everyone has been complaining about, or am i still having trouble with my computer?

Do you mean in Open? If so, yes...getting booted out repeatedly is the main problem. On my computer, it also periodically freezes my screen.
Of course, still no response from Yahoo from my query.

I know you have a lot of other things on your list to do. Thanks for setting it up!

On the first day Dinah and I had a chat with Dr. Bob! Can you believe it? I had a chat with Dr. Bob!!!
It was intimate. ;-)
I find the chat annoyingly slow. At times it takes well over a minute to send text through. It hasn't booted anyone out though, so that's certainly an improvement.
Ah, Bob, I chatted with Bob. :-) I'll never forget it. I'd say it was almost better than meeting him in person.

Why doesn't someone set up a certain day of the week and pick like two 2-3 hour blocks of time to have official chats. It is really hard randomly checking chat to see if anyone is there.
