I think that's very nice of you, JYL. Perhaps while you're greeting them, you could assure them that they would be more than welcome to post at Social. And that if non-newcomer posters aren't responding to their posts, it's only because they aren't allowed to post on that board, not because they don't wish to.

That way if newcomers *choose* to post only among themselves, they have that option. But they don't feel like they *have* to or that they aren't welcome elsewhere on the board.

Great, thanks! Let me set up a list, and I'll let you know when you have access...

PS: Dinah, you already do, as a deputy administrator.

OK, it should be working now, let me know if you run into any problems. And thanks again!

Famous last words, Newbies was working, but I caused a problem with 2000 and probably Students. But I think they're fixed? Thanks for your patience,

oops. I didn't see the list until after I lept right in there. I guess that means I'd like to be a greeter too.

I agree, thanks, PC!

I wouldn't mind you joining as an official greeter, either...

Or you could remove the restrictions and let everyone welcome the newcomers. And at the same time have people not feel bad the first time they click to post and find that they have been excluded.

Silly idea, I know. Forget I ever mentioned it.

Dinah, I really like that idea. I too would like to welcome people but don't feel like I want to make it into a job.
Good idea.

Yeah, Dinah I agree (nm)

What sort of committment is involved Dr B?

I wouldn't committ to doing it particularly regularly because I have to get stuck into my thesis sooner or later...

But I would like to be able to greet newbies.

I agree with this. I post from work and I may not always be able to spend as much time on babble as I would like. I would feel awful if a week or three went by and I was unable to greet the newbies. That would make me look unfriendly and unsupportive. That is the only reason that I have held back from requesting to be an official greeter.

There hasn't been a specific commitment, and the more there are, the more shared the responsibility is...

Well, if that clarifies that it is ok that I may not always be available on the newbie board, then I would like to join in as a greeter.

I think he needs to add you to some list or other so that you can post there. He'll probably let you know once that has been done.

This is so great! What wonderful support ! (nm)
